A dead tree on a small island

Three Forks is a beautiful trail in the White River National Forest near Rifle. We found it when we went to see the climbing cliffs at Rifle Mountain. We drove through the canyon and kept on going until we came to the trail head. The day we went, we had the trail to ourselves, not another car in the parking lot, but it was a weekday before Memorial Day. The trail winds through a valley with a small stream. We stopped counting the beaver dams long before we turned around at Garden Gulch. There were a lot of larkspur, several kinds of violets, and red columbine.
